Once I finished the basement entertainment wall with the home theater screen, we needed an entertainment console that would hold all of the gear. I had wanted to create something that combined reclaimed wood and metal. I found someone that had torn down an old barn in Iowa and had these interesting oak boards. These boards had all kinds of character, but needs some attention too. I cleaned them up with mineral spirits to figure out how I wanted the grain to match up. I had recently purchased a planer, so this was the perfect time to use it to plane the surfaces of the wood. I also cut one clean edge to joint the two pairs of boards, but left the edges with all the character they had from the barn. I welded and sprayed the frames to hold the shelves, and created a mesh back and angle iron channels to hide all the wiring. The end result is a mix of metal and wood, and was just the look I was going after.
