By the time I installed the basketball goal, winter was approaching, and I decided to hold off until spring to take the next step—installing the electrical, lights, fan, and speakers. First up is installing the rigid conduit required outside in Illinois to each of the 6 posts and the areas I wanted outdoor outlets. Then I needed to run conduit for the speakers, which I chose to leverage pvc 3/4”. I thought running the speaker wire was going to be fairly difficult, so I prepared. I bought a very long fish tape, and Monoprice 4 wire cable assembly. Using pipe lube and the fish tape, I worked the wire through the brick wall into the access panel, then into the conduit running under our sidewalk all the way to another access panel behind the structure, then from there into the back post. Successful and smooth, I then extended the electrical wire from the post I had wired it to in the winter into the structure. Then I extended the electrical wiring to all six lights, two outlets, and the fan. Installing the speakers allowed us to play music from our receiver inside out on our patio. I then started wrapping each of the six posts in cedar, then applied trim at the top and bottom. I tried additional decorative cedar trim on two posts, but decided I couldn’t live with the gaps it created with natural expansion and contraction, oh well, worth a shot. Finally, I created a box to cover up all the wiring on the back side between the chimney and the structure. Time to install the lights and the fan. The fan is such a nice addition, and for the lights, I chose an Edison style bulb with a warm 2500k led bulb and not too bright, which is a nice effect at night. At this point, I considered the Backyard Patio Structure complete, although over time I’ve done a few things to it, including wrapping the electrical outlet post in cedar, adding a few more outlets, and redoing the basketball goal, which may end up as another post.
